Keywords might sound ‘boring’ but they are the basis of getting traffic that will make you money.

The obvious example is with Pay-Per-Click ads, but keywords are also the basis of almost any campaign. For example:

>> Article Marketing

You need to optimize your article for a specific keyword you want it to rank in the search engines or get found in an article directory.

You also use Keyword Anchor text to link back to your web site or ‘money page’ with the keyword you are trying to that for.

Same goes for

>> Video Marketing

>> Social/Web 2.0 sites etc.

>> Your Own Sites Content

In all of this you are trying to attract people to your website based on the certain keywords they are searching for on the internet or attract them from websites that they are on that are related to those keywords.

Here’s My Point, or the Take Away I Want You To Get From This:

You need to target the right keywords so you don’t waste your time or ad budget no matter what sort of marketing you are doing!

At the very least you need to be tracking your traffic and seeing which traffic makes you money.

This is obvious when you are spending money directly on keywords with Pay Per Click search engines. But you should also track when you are using ‘free’ methods such as Article or Video marketing etc.

This way you stop wasting time optimizing your content for rubbish keywords – and only put your efforts into Money Making Keywords.

This may seem obvious but it’s surprising how many people just Don’t Bother – even with Pay-Per-Click stuff.

Crazy!

Here’s another thing:

You Just Don’t Know What Keywords Will or Won’t Convert – until you test!

For example general advice is that broad keywords get more traffic and are less profitable for 2 main reasons:

1) They Have More Competition (because they have more traffic)

2) The People Who Use ‘Em Are Usually Casual Browsers – NOT looking to buy stuff!

In general this is true.

But not always!

For example in one of my niche markets I have found that one of the top converting keywords is just a broad two word phrase!

If I hadn’t have tested it I would have left a lot of money on the table.

The Quickest Way To Test Keywords

Even if your main focus is ‘free’ methods such as article, video, web 2.0 marketing you can still do a small test using Pay Per Click ads.

This is about the fastest way you can test keywords to find the buyers.

Here’s how to do it even without blowing a fortune!

1) Start off with the most obvious buying keywords

For example:

1) Keywords based around a product name

2)  How To or Guide (especially good for info products)

3)  Shopper Mentality Keywords (add these as modifiers to main keywords):

> buy
> buy online
> purchase
> purchase online
> shipping
> review
> compare
> coupon
> discount

2) Set Your Budget At A Daily Level You Can Afford

This might be $10/day if you really are on a budget. Obviously the more you spend in a day the faster you can test.

3) Make Sure You Track To The Keyword Level

This is easy if you are selling you own product, for example with Google you can just use their conversion optimizer which will be in your Adwords account.

If you are selling affiliate products then there is software you will need to buy which will do this for you.

4) Get Enough Traffic Before Giving Up

Take note of any keywords that get a sale in 200 clicks. Now this may or may not be profitable as far as the Adwords campaign goes. But this isn’t the point.

This Is Just About Finding The Money Keywords!

You have made an investment in your business and have now found the keywords that make you money and you can base your other marketing efforts on those keywords!

Of course if a keyword was profitable on your PPC campaign keep it going and stop the ones that weren’t.

Rinse and repeat with another batch of keywords.

By controlling your ad budgets and testing a small numbers at a time you don’t have to worry about burning through a whole bunch of money to find the Money Keywords real fast!

There is one basic but very COSTLY mistake when it comes to keyword
research online. And as one of my readers I want to make sure you know about this as it is important!

If you’re a more experienced marketer then you probably know about this and it’s a given, but you’d be surprised by the number of people that go about this the wrong way!

This is done with the best free tool I use and recommend which is Google’s
which is found here:

Anyway it’s easy to be ‘fooled’ into thinking a certain keyword gets a lot of searches when it really gets hardly any.

THIS CAN BE VERY COSTLY

Especially when you start getting backlinks, writing articles, shooting videos
and building new sites…

…all based on trying to rank for a keyword that
gets hardly any traffic!

WHAT’s THE BIG MISTAKE THEN?

Well it’s just the way most people use Google’s keyword tool and also how many other marketers have taught how to use it.

It goes like this:

You type in your main keyword phrase and see what comes up. You then look at the number of searches it gives you for your main keyword and other related keywords.

Lets look at the keyword:

xbox for

Here are the Google search results:

Wow Millions of searches right?

WRONG!

As this is for the BROAD term.

But change the settings for ‘EXACT MATCH’ and it goes right down!

Now the keyword XBOX FOR isn’t something I would go after even if I was in the X Box market. It just serves as a clear example for you

The take away from this is if you want to an accurate idea of how many searches a certain keyword *really* gets then just choose the ‘Exact Match’
option in Google’s keyword tool.

HERE’S HOW

This will be on the right hand side – you should see a drop down menu which will show ‘Broad’ by default.

Just click on the arrow and choose ‘Exact’ instead!

3. Use your ebook to offer help

One of the best ways to grab your potential customers’ attention is by offering to solve a problem they have encountered. Spend some time researching online by visiting blogs and forums to find out the key issues or difficulties your target market are experiencing.

Once you have gained this knowledge, the next step is to search for the most effective solutions you can find and incorporate this information into a winning ebook.

4. Always hire a proofreader

Proofreading or critiquing your own work is never easy and this is why even best selling authors use the services of a professional editor before their work goes to print. A fresh pair of eyes can work wonders to spice up your content as well as correcting any mistakes you have missed.

Its best if the proofreader has a good knowledge of your chosen subject and is aware of the market you are aiming for in order to ensure the ebook remains focused and directed towards your intended readership.

5. Know your audience

Get to know your audience and what it is they are looking for. Once you understand this its easy to cater to their needs. Ensure you have a good online presence and communicate regularly with your target market through your website, forums and blogs.

Sounds boring right?

But I’m sure you may have heard about some of these
FTC guidelines this month…

But it’s *really* important to know the gist of this
which I will attempt to give you here!

Over the past week or so there has been a lot of
noise over some new FTC guidelines…

Many marketers have been panicking over this and
there seems to be quite a bit of confusion.

Here’s a quick overview of my understanding:

Affiliates

For example when promoting with blogs affiliates
should have some sort of blurb stating they get paid
for any stuff sold or something along those lines.

Nothing to big of a deal right?

Product Owners

But it also effects marketers with their own
products!

Specifically when it comes to the use of testimonials
and endorsements from others on the products
sales page.

First a question:

What’s the most powerful and influential sort of
third party testimonial?

One where the client has given a specific
result after using the product or service!

For example “I lost 1 stone in 5 minutes
with wonder pill x”

That would be a much more powerful
testimonial (if it were believable)
rather than:

“I love the wonder pill x this is
a great company to deal with”

As this is just a wishy-washy statement.

This is where the FTC has spoilt things for anyone
using testimonials…

Particularly where a specific result or experience
is used.

They now expect the typical, average result consumers
can expect to be displayed…

…and for you to have documented proof of this!

Almost an impossible task, especially as hardly
anyone actually does anything.

This is particularly true when it comes to info products!

Now the more general wishy washy testimonials will
probably be okay, just think twice before using one
with a specific result!

Publishing Success Newsletter – 6th Oct 2009

I’ll tell you about the ‘Paypal Shocker’ in a sec,
and if you are selling any of your own
products online (or are planning to)…

…you really need to know about this!

But first:

Internet Marketer Loses Ability To Count

If you saw last weeks newsletter you will
probably have realized I’m talking about
moi…

If not feel free to point and laugh as I publicly
heap shame on myself!

Anyway I gave away a free PDF report
called:

“How To Make Your First $1000
Online In 30 Days”

One of the things I *wrongly* mentioned
was that you only need to make $3.33
a day to get to $1000/Month|

D’OH!

As much as I wish this was the case it’s
actually $33.33 a day to make approx
$1000 month…

Anyway when you break it down to
that (just $33 or so a day) the goal
of getting to 1K in a month seems
much easier.

It could mean just selling between
1 – 3 things a day as an affiliate
depending on what commission
you get.

I updated the report as soon as
I realized my mistake…

PayPal Shocker

If you are selling any of your own products
online or are planning to at some point
you need to hear this!

You see many marketers just use Paypal
in order to take payments from their
customers.

In fact although I don’t use Paypal much,
I do use them for some products.

And as they are easy to use and get
set up with an account without all
the hassles of getting a full merchant
account…

Many marketers just use Paypal
as a quick and easy way to be able
to trade online.

BUT…

Recently a friend of mine launched
a new product to his list.

Now this guy knows how to launch
a product and his offer sold out
as expected – in the end…

He was using Paypal to take payments and
has a good track record with them trading
thousands of dollars through his Paypal
account…

But for some reason someone from Paypal
(wrongly) decided what he was selling was
some sort of pyramid scheme which goes
against their terms of service…

What he was selling actually was nothing of
the sort but they shut down his account
anyway – right in the middle of his launch!

I really feel for him as he has thousands
owed to him by Paypal and he probably won’t
see a penny of it for months!

Why You Should Think Twice

Now you may be thinking that you
may be in a small niche or that you
won’t be doing any big launches so
this just won’t happen to you…

But it can be surprising how fast your
business can grow, especially if you
are building a list.

Say for example you survey your list
and find they are in desperate need
of certain info they are willing to pay
for…

So you create the product and launch
it which brings in a ton of orders…

How would you feel if Paypal shut you
down when hundreds of orders start
coming in?

You see my friend who got his Paypal
account shutdown was only launching
a product to his own list.

It wasn’t one of these massive launches
where all the ‘guru’s’ copy and paste the
exact same email template and virtually the
whole market gets pitched!

No. This was a launch to his own list.

So you could use Paypal and be totally
fine, but do you really want to risk it?

Who Else Can You Use?

1) Clickbank

If you are selling info products then I would
suggest Clickbank.

They are easy to use and you will have a built
in affiliate program where they track and pay
affiliates.

I use Clickbank a lot and recommend them.

2) 2Checkout

Another popular option although I haven’t used
them myself.

I would think seriously about who you use,
chances are you could use Paypal and
not have any problems.

But that’s what my friend thought but
it did happen to him and almost ballsed
up his product launch!
