The Deal With Online Marketing & The FTC Stuff


Sounds boring right?

But I’m sure you may have heard about some of these
FTC guidelines this month…

But it’s *really* important to know the gist of this
which I will attempt to give you here!

Over the past week or so there has been a lot of
noise over some new FTC guidelines…

Many marketers have been panicking over this and
there seems to be quite a bit of confusion.

Here’s a quick overview of my understanding:

Affiliates

For example when promoting with blogs affiliates
should have some sort of blurb stating they get paid
for any stuff sold or something along those lines.

Nothing to big of a deal right?

Product Owners

But it also effects marketers with their own
products!

Specifically when it comes to the use of testimonials
and endorsements from others on the products
sales page.

First a question:

What’s the most powerful and influential sort of
third party testimonial?

One where the client has given a specific
result after using the product or service!

For example “I lost 1 stone in 5 minutes
with wonder pill x”

That would be a much more powerful
testimonial (if it were believable)
rather than:

“I love the wonder pill x this is
a great company to deal with”

As this is just a wishy-washy statement.

This is where the FTC has spoilt things for anyone
using testimonials…

Particularly where a specific result or experience
is used.

They now expect the typical, average result consumers
can expect to be displayed…

…and for you to have documented proof of this!

Almost an impossible task, especially as hardly
anyone actually does anything.

This is particularly true when it comes to info products!

Now the more general wishy washy testimonials will
probably be okay, just think twice before using one
with a specific result!

Paypal Shocker


Publishing Success Newsletter – 6th Oct 2009

I’ll tell you about the ‘Paypal Shocker’ in a sec,
and if you are selling any of your own
products online (or are planning to)…

…you really need to know about this!

But first:

Internet Marketer Loses Ability To Count

If you saw last weeks newsletter you will
probably have realized I’m talking about
moi…

If not feel free to point and laugh as I publicly
heap shame on myself!

Anyway I gave away a free PDF report
called:

“How To Make Your First $1000
Online In 30 Days”

One of the things I *wrongly* mentioned
was that you only need to make $3.33
a day to get to $1000/Month|

D’OH!

As much as I wish this was the case it’s
actually $33.33 a day to make approx
$1000 month…

Anyway when you break it down to
that (just $33 or so a day) the goal
of getting to 1K in a month seems
much easier.

It could mean just selling between
1 – 3 things a day as an affiliate
depending on what commission
you get.

I updated the report as soon as
I realized my mistake…

So if you want to download it again

PayPal Shocker

If you are selling any of your own products
online or are planning to at some point
you need to hear this!

You see many marketers just use Paypal
in order to take payments from their
customers.

In fact although I don’t use Paypal much,
I do use them for some products.

And as they are easy to use and get
set up with an account without all
the hassles of getting a full merchant
account…

Many marketers just use Paypal
as a quick and easy way to be able
to trade online.

BUT…

Recently a friend of mine launched
a new product to his list.

Now this guy knows how to launch
a product and his offer sold out
as expected – in the end…

He was using Paypal to take payments and
has a good track record with them trading
thousands of dollars through his Paypal
account…

But for some reason someone from Paypal
(wrongly) decided what he was selling was
some sort of pyramid scheme which goes
against their terms of service…

What he was selling actually was nothing of
the sort but they shut down his account
anyway – right in the middle of his launch!

I really feel for him as he has thousands
owed to him by Paypal and he probably won’t
see a penny of it for months!

Why You Should Think Twice

Now you may be thinking that you
may be in a small niche or that you
won’t be doing any big launches so
this just won’t happen to you…

But it can be surprising how fast your
business can grow, especially if you
are building a list.

Say for example you survey your list
and find they are in desperate need
of certain info they are willing to pay
for…

So you create the product and launch
it which brings in a ton of orders…

How would you feel if Paypal shut you
down when hundreds of orders start
coming in?

You see my friend who got his Paypal
account shutdown was only launching
a product to his own list.

It wasn’t one of these massive launches
where all the ‘guru’s’ copy and paste the
exact same email template and virtually the
whole market gets pitched!

No. This was a launch to his own list.

So you could use Paypal and be totally
fine, but do you really want to risk it?

Who Else Can You Use?

1) Clickbank

If you are selling info products then I would
suggest Clickbank.

They are easy to use and you will have a built
in affiliate program where they track and pay
affiliates.

I use Clickbank a lot and recommend them.

2) 2Checkout

Another popular option although I haven’t used
them myself.

I would think seriously about who you use,
chances are you could use Paypal and
not have any problems.

But that’s what my friend thought but
it did happen to him and almost ballsed
up his product launch!

Sales Boosting Tips – How To Sell More Online


I’m going to show you some tactics we
see used by the guru’s to sell more
when they launch new products…

This is powerful stuff because although
we see these all the time in the IM
(internet Marketing) world…

I’ll show you why these methods are
really powerful when it comes to
smaller niche markets…

What If You Don’t Sell Your Own Stuff?

Don’t worry, I’ll also show how you can
use these principles for boosting sales
even for affiliate products (in a future post)

Online Sales Boosting Tips

I was inspired to share this with you
today as a recent course that I recommended
started out with a very low price point
of just $9.99

In case you missed it this was for Ewen Chia’s
Secret Affiliate Weapon 2.0′

Anyway I got quite a few emails from people
saying when they checked it out it the
price was $27!

(Even though I did mention in the email
that the price would be going up over
the weekend)

Anyway Ewen is a very good marketer and
this is a good tactic to boost sales when
you launch a new product.

You just start at a low launch price which
you then raise after a short period of
time.

2 Keys To Making This Work

1) Have a specific and short period of time
that you say you will raise the price.

This will let your potential customers
know where they stand and will motivate
them to buy right now.

Now if the time frame is too long, people
will procrastinate and could easily forget
the offer.

That’s why it should be short, 2 or 3 days
works really well.

2) Make sure you actually DO raise the price
when you said you would.

If you don’t then you will harm your credibility,
and people just won’t believe you in the future
when you say you are raising you’re prices etc.

Bonus Tactic

Simply do it twice!

In other words start off with your special,
low launch price for the first 2 or 3 days
then raise the price.

Only this time you will be raising the price
*again* in 2 or 3 days time.

This can get you an extra surge of sales
before you start selling your product
at the regular price point.

Now this sort of thing is common in the
IM (Internet Marketing) but don’t be fooled
that’s all these launch tactics are
limited to.

In fact they can work *much* better in smaller
niche markets where people aren’t used to seeing
the ‘IM’ type of marketing tactics.

I’m going to tell you about a really
awesome way to get traffic to your website…

…and if you are sick of all the ‘Google
Slaps’ – the way Google can be a big fat jerk
to it’s advertisers you’ll going to love this!

At least when it comes to the normal Adwords
ads they show on there search engine results
Google can be a pain in the butt…

But at the same time there is a really cool
way to use Google -  where you have can place
your ads directly on other peoples websites.

You can do this on Googles ‘Content’ network.

This is good for some good reasons.

1) You won’t have to worry so much about
stuff like quality score, getting keywords
in your ads and Google slaps in general.

2) You can get very cheap clicks as opposed
to advertising on Googles search engine results.

How It Works

You choose the keywords that you want to use
and Google will come up with the sites
it thinks are a good match (also called
contextual advertising).

The trouble is Google hardly ever does a good job of
this and you can find your ad on sites that are
totally unsuitable for your campaign.

But much better than this is that you can
advertise on specific websites that you choose
(as long as they show Google Ads)

The Power Of Placement Ads

I suggest starting a brand new campaign where you
will run only ‘placement’ ads.

This is because you will want to bid differently,
use different ads and track these results
totally seperately.

The power of this is that you can advertise on
targeted websites that already have a good ranking
in the search engines for your keywords.

To do this just type in your keywords into
Google and Yahoo and go through the first
page or two of results for each one.

What you are looking for are sites that are
showing Google ads. Make a note of the
ones that do.

More Tips

1) Target specific web pages or sections
of a website.

Look for individual pages on the site where
you think the visitor will be most qualified.

2) Top Fold Display

Make sure your ads are showing in the
‘top fold’ of the webpage.

This just means that they will be seen without
the visitor having to scroll down.

This is especially true if you are advertising
on a CPM basis (see below).

3) CPM Vs Cost-Per-Click

CPM means ‘Cost Per 1000′

If you choose this option instead of ‘cost-per-click’
then you are charged every thousand times your ad
is shown (which is called an impression).

When done correctly you can get some very cheap
clicks, the name of the game here is to get as
many clicks as possible!

So with this model it is important real people
see your ads – which is why you want to be
sure they are displaying at the top of the
web page.

If it is stuck at the bottom hardly anyone will
click on it and you’ll lose your shirt!

4) Build A List

Understand that the frame of mind
of the traffic is generally not
in the ‘buying’ mood.

This is because you are pulling people
off of other websites it can be unwise
to try and get the traffic to buy something
right away.

Instead I would look to build a list
that you can make multiple sales
with other time!

5) Start Small & Test

No need for me to go on here, track
and test on a small level and see
which sites see you in profit
before ramping up!

Go to http://twitter.com and register a free account.
This is easy and takes no more than a few minutes.

2. Fill out your Twitter profile.

It will give you the appearance of being a permanent
participant, and help you build credibility
more quickly.

Try to make it interesting and you can include a
link back to your website to!

3. Post Some Useful Links.

They can be to the articles you have posted around
the Internet that track back to your web site, as well
as to pages on your own site or blog.

And don’t forget other content such as any videos
you have on You Tube etc.

What if you don’t have much of your own content
already out there?

Then just post stuff  to other peoples content
if you think your followers will like it.

4. Search For Potential Followers

Use keywords to find other Twitter users that
may be potential clients.

When you are logged into your account
just click on the ‘Find People’ link on
the menu at the top of the page.

Then search using your keywords to find
people in your market to follow.

Use the follow feature to create a connection.

5.  Follow Everyone Who Follows You

It can bring you in contact with others who follow
them and possibly increase your follower base.

To do this just click on the ‘Followers’ link
inside your account and you can follow back
who you like.

6. Post Something Every Day

Even a short comment with a link will do nicely.
The more you post, the better chance you have of
expanding your Twitter network.

Avoid posting to sales letters – instead post to
useful and fun stuff.

7. Vary Your Posts

Don’t simply copy something you posted before.
Mix it up, or your posts will look more like spam.

8. Ask Questions And Make Comments

It will possibly stimulate some cross posts that
lead to promoting your web site.

9. Respond To Any Private Messages

You never know this could lead to a sale :-)

10. Have Fun With The Site

Once your get the hang of Twitter, you may be surprised
at how many contacts you can make, and how they increase
your site traffic.
